REFLECTIONS...
Plan:
Artist Research:
Lee Friedlander: Lee Friedlander is a american photographer and was born July 14 1934. He is mostly known for his asymmetrical black and white pictures of the American “social landscape”. His interest in photography began when he was 14 years old because of his “fascination with the equipment". He studied at a art center school in Los Angeles for a while before moving to New York City in 1956. In New York Friedlander had an opportunity to began his career as he took photos for Atlantic Records where he photographed jazz musicians. He also started to work as a freelance photographer for magazines like Collier’s, Esquire, McCall’s, and Sports Illustrated. When he began his career american culture changed a lot like the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War and political assassinations. He wanted to understand the time by looking at the change. He recorded his own reactions to change, and found that photography is better at identifying changes. He published his first book called Self Portrait: Photographs by Lee Friedlander, in 1970. It was based on this discovery. He has published fifteen books, matching the journey through a book with his own thoughts of how he sees with the camera. In 1963, Friedlander has his first solo museum show in the International Museum of Photography. He focused on photographing his surroundings. His book 'Stems' reflects his life during the time of his knee replacement surgery. He has said that his "limbs" reminded him of plant stems. These images display textures which were not a feature of his earlier work. Lee's career expanded when the Museum of Modern Art presented his photos, almost 400. He also received a Hasselblad International Award.
Analysing Lee Friedlander's Photos:
This photo is one of my favorite photo of Lee Friedlander. Firstly, I really like how the colours are monochrome as I think it makes the photo look more authentic. The different contrasts create a bit of mystery within the photo. Also the reflections in the glass creates different kinds of shapes which looks almost like a jigsaw. You can tell that the man is in the shop however it is not as clear if the little boy is. The man looks as if he is disapproving of something happening outside the shop and if you look closely it looks like it could be a protest or a parade going on in the background. I also really like how it reminds me of the 1950's where they had a lot of diners. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo and the photo looks like it has a sharp texture maybe because of the shapes. Some parts of the photo look lighter than the others, I think that he has used the a very subtle light source to create a intriguing and mystery effect. The photo is clearly taken outside and in the reflection it kind of looks as if it was busy at the time.
In this photo you can clearly see the reflection which I really like as it makes the framework interesting because you can see the background. The composition of this image is quite different to his other photos, you can see that there is an event taking place in the photo. With the mirror being in the centre it divides the image up into three parts, each one having something different in the photo. When you look at the photo it looks like you are looking at three separate photos so it creates a very busy atmosphere. I like how the black and white theme with the contrast makes the patterns more detailed. The photo being black and white makes it more dramatic. If the photo had some colours the photograph might not be as intriguing, the colours might even be kind of distracting. Also I like how it looks as if it was set a while back maybe during the Vietnam War as the war was happening when Lee was starting his career. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo and the lighting of the photo makes it look quite intriguing. By having the images all in black and white, this makes a more dramatic image. If the colours were present, the viewer perhaps wouldn’t find the photograph as exciting as it would be quite distracting.
Naoya Hatakeyama: Naoya Hatakeyama was born in 1958 in Iwate, Japan. He completed his studies at Tsukuba University in 1984 and since then he has been based in Tokyo. Naoya has had numerous solo and group exhibitions and he has also had his photographs placed in places like the National Museum of Modern Art, Osaka; the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Yale University Art Gallery and many more other places. In 1997 he received the 22nd Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award. He created the river series in 1993-1994 where his photos looked as if they had shadows in them however the shadows refer to his reflections and also they refer to Talbot’s On the Art of Fixing a Shadow.“Blast” is one of Hatakeyama’s best-known series and it has been exhibited in many museum exhibitions. Hatakeyama began photographing “Blast” in 1995. The collection was shown in the exhibition “Aspects of Contemporary Photography – another reality” held during the same year at the Kawasaki City Museum. Since then, Hatakeyama has continued to work on the collection and it has been presented in many exhibitions in Japan and abroad.
After the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, Hatakeyama felt that he could no longer continue to make photographs in the way that he had in the past. His decision to take stock of the “Blast” in the current situation marks an important event requiring long-term analysis.
Hatakeyama’s video work “TWENTY-FOUR BLASTS 2011” was shown in many exhibitions and the first one was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and then at the Huis Marseille in Amsterdam.

Analysing Naoya Hatakeyama's Photos:
This photo is one of my favorite's of Naoya Hatakeyama. Firstly I really like how you can see a faint reflection of the building in the water. Also I really like the ripples of the water in the background; the ripples start of quite high then they slowly disappear, I think this makes the photo even better. Naoya has shown us what a reflection looks like when it is disturbed as it makes the reflection in the photo lookout of focus but I think that this makes the photo even better, this is where the ripples come from. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo, as it is not to bright it makes the photo quite intriguing. There is quite a a few shapes in the photo, you have the lines running all throughout the photo and then you also have the building which looks like a cylinder kind of shape. In my opinion I think that the photo has quite a smooth texture to it, most likely because of the water. The image has a blue tone which gives the photograph a cool and calm feeling, it also has hints of orange and cream/white.
This is another photo of Naoya Hatakeyama which I really like. Firstly I like how you can see a reflection of what looks like to me a street, the reflection is a little out of focus however I think it makes the photo look better. Additionally I really like the ripples of the water in the photo, they create a line pattern and they slowly disappear. I think that the exposure is a little under exposed but it adds mystery to the photo. From the side the photo is almost pitch black and it focus on the reflection in the middle. There is quite a a few shapes in the photo, you have the lines of the water running at the top of the photo and then you have a building on the left side of the photo and what looks like a lamppost on the right side of the photo. In my opinion I think that the photo has quite a silky texture to it, most likely because of the water. The image has quite a dull tone which gives the photograph a mysterious feeling.
Richard Heeks: Richard Heeks is a creative photographer who is based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Having shot reflections in eyes, he used the same techniques on bubbles and captured panorama images of spectacular scenes from the bubble reflections. Richard was inspired by a scene in the movie 'Blade Runner', as he saw a close-up shot of the human eye with fire reflected on the pupil, He decided he wanted to try photographing reflections in the eyes. He just blew soap bubbles and noticed how s beautiful the reflections in the bubbles were. "I got kind of obsessed with trying to photograph the reflections and trying all kinds of different bubble mixtures and photography techniques," he says. His obsession for the bubbles has helped him capture amazing reflections within the bubble. He put shot bubbles inside bubbles which created macro close-ups, and has even stuck needles in them to show that suspenseful moment when a needle punctures its surface. Richard says "I love photographing beautiful things. I like spectacular too." In 2009 Richard became famous for photographing soap bubbles. In July his work was presented in most of the UK national press. He has also had his bubble shoots featured in Digital Camera magazine in their October edition too. He started off trying to capture the reflections in bubbles which eventually became some of his best work.
Analysing Richard Heeks's Photos:
This photo is one of my favorite photo of Richard Heeks. Firstly I really like how the colours all blend together and there is a mixture of colours, for example the leaves in the background are very brown and orange and in the bubble the colours are purple and blue; I think all the colours really work well together. Colorful imagery is an effective way to capture a viewer's attention which I think he does really well in all of his photos. Also in the reflection in the bubble you can see the trees and Richard, the photo is clearly taken outside and the tress relate to the leaves and I think you can tell that the photo was taken in Autumn. The background of the photo is out of focus which makes the bubble stand out even more. I also really like how it reminds me of my childhood as bubbles are mostly associated with little children. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo and the photo looks like it has a soft texture maybe because of the way the bubble looks soft. I really like how Richard does not just use a simple reflection like a mirror but he uses bubbles, some people may have forgotten that you can even get reflections in bubble.
This photo is another one of my favorite photos of Richard Heeks. Firstly I really like the how the colours in the photo are bright colours like yellow, blue and purple. Seeing as colorful imagery has an effect on the photo I think Richard has manipulated the colours in a way to make his photo stand out, which it does. Also the colours seem to be repeating themselves in a particular pattern, it goes purple, blue and green and at the bottom of the bubble the colours go in a circular pattern making it look almost like a whirlpool. Another part of the photo I like is the spiral that runs throughout the bubble and also I like how there is a little shine on the bubble. I think the shine is coming from the sun which means that Richard has used a natural source of light in his photo. Also in the reflection, in the bubble you can see what looks like some houses and a person, the photo is clearly taken outside. The background of the photo is out of focus which makes the bubble stand out even more. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo and the photo looks like it has a soft texture maybe because of the way the bubble looks soft.
Saul Leiter: Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh in 1923. Saul's interest in photography began when he was in his late teens, and in 1946 he left Cleveland and moved to New York City to pursue his dreams. During his time in New York he met the painter Richard Pousette-Dart, who was experimenting with photography, his friendship had grew and all the photography exhibitions he saw in New York sparked his growing interest in photography. Saul started experimenting with black and white photography and by 1948 he began to experiment in color. Edward Steichen included Leiter’s black and white photographs in the exhibition Always the Young Stranger at the Museum of Modern Art in 1953. Also Saul has had his colour fashioned work published in Esquire. He then continued to work as a fashion photographer for the next 20 years and was published in Show, Elle, British Vogue, Queen, and Nova. Saul Leiter is very known for his painting like photographs of the street life in New York, which he produced between 1948 and 1960. He has also made a huge contribution to street photography, His abstracted forms unique compositions has made his photographs look like a painting which has helped make his work stand out. This is most likely because he has worked as a photographer and a painter throughout the years; this shows how creative he is. Saul's work is featured in Jane Livingston’s The New York School and in Martin Harrison’s Appearances: Fashion Photography Since 1945. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the National Gallery of Australia; the Whitney Museum of American Art and many more places.
Analysing Saul Leiter's Photos:
I really like this photo of Saul Leiter because firstly I like the time era that the photo was taken in, it looks like it was taken a while ago because of the type of bus in the photo. I also really like how there is so much going on in the photo, for example the bus and cars driving, the man on the telephone and the people sat down and chatting. The photo looks like it is a bit dull however it makes the photo look good; it is just the right exposure. There are many different shapes in the photo and it looks a bit like the photo is split into three because of the lines between the glass. The colours in the photo give it quite a warm tone as they all blend together and also the light looks like it is coming from the sun so that adds to the warm feeling. I really like how Saul created the reflection in the photograph by using a glass window which makes it look like it has a lot of reflections in the photograph.
I really like this photo as well because of the way Saul has used the reflection. Again you can tell that the photo was taken a while back and I also really like how he shows the reflection and the real thing. Also again the photo looks a little bit dull, maybe because it was not a sunny day when he took this photo which shows how the weather can have a huge impact on the photo you are taking. the shapes are mainly coming from the barber's sign and the photo looks quite old and retro which I think is the reason Saul photography appeals to me because I like retro and vintage styles. There is a pattern in the photo which is the colours (red and blue) and they keep repeating them self in a spiral pattern. The blue and red colours in the photo give the photograph quite a cool feeling overall. The light looks like it has been created by a natural source of light which would be the sun.
Working In The Style Of Naoya Hatakeyama: Shoot 1
Below are the photos that I have taken in the style of Naoya Hatakeyama. Naoya is well known for his river series reflections so I am trying to capture the reflections in water such as lakes and puddles.
Analysing My Work In The Style Of Naoya Hatakeyama:
WORST PHOTO: This is my worst photo from the shoot above. Firstly as you can tell the photo is extremely out of focus. You can not even see the whole mirror as the angle of the photo is wrong and not right for the photo. Also you can not really see a good reflection in the water as it is not very clear. The photo seems to be a little bit under exposed as it seems a little dull as the lighting is not great. Overall I do not really like this photo and it is very bad.
BEST PHOTO: This is one of my best photos from the shoot above. One of the reasons that it is the best is because it has a nice and clear reflection in the water which is how my artists does his work. Also I really like how you can see the original object and the reflection. The angle of the photo is good as you can see everything and the exposure and focus point are really good as well. The only think I would change is I would add a bit more colour as it seems a little bit dull however overall it is a good photo and I really like it.

Working In The Style Of Richard Heeks: Shoot 2
Below are the photos that have taken in the style of Richard Heeks. Richard uses bubbles in his work to get reflections which is what I have tried to do. Some photos came out bad however some came out good. Whilst doing this shoot I realised how hard it is to get reflections in a bubble but I really enjoyed doing it and I might try and do some more and maybe base my final piece around bubbles.
Analysing My Work In The Style Of Richard Heeks:
WORST PHOTO: In this shoot I had quite a few bad bubbles because It was quite hard and it was the first time that I did it. This one was one off the bad bubbles because firstly the photo is very out of focus. You can barley see the photo and you can not see any reflection in the bubble at all. I think the photo came out like this because I moved the camera too quick when I took the photo. The photo also looks a little bit over exposed and the background of the photo is not good as it is just of the ground. There is no shapes or clear colours and patterns in the photo so that does not make the photo stand out.
BEST PHOTO: Whilst doing the bubble shoot it was quite difficult to try and get a good photo as the bubbles popped quite quick but I managed to get a couple of good ones. I really like bubble reflection photography and I am going to do another shoot in a different environment. The photo below is one of my favourite ones. I really like it because firstly you can clearly see the reflection of the school building and it is also in a spiral like pattern which I really like. The next thing I like is how it is on a clear blue sky background which makes the bubble stand out even more and in the bubble it has some of the sky colours in it, you can see light blue and pink which makes the bubble look even more nice. I think that the exposure of the photo is just right and you can see some shapes in the photo which come from the building in the bubble. The photo I think has quite a smooth, soft and silky texture to it and I think that this is because of the bubble as a bubble Is usually soft and delicate. You can see a pattern in the bubble which is the colours that keep repeating themselves all around the bubble, this makes the bubble look really good and stand out more. I took the photo outside on a sunny day which was good because the sun was a natural source of light which helped create the reflection in the bubble. I think if the photo was taken on a dull and cloudy day there might not be a reflection and there might not be any colours on it so the bubble would not look as good as it would on a sunny day. I think that this photo is successful and I really like it.
BEST PHOTO: The photo above is another one of my favourites from this shoot. It was quite difficult to get a good photo for the first time however I think that this one is pretty good. Firstly I like how you can see the sun light which is a natural source of light reflecting on the bubble which gives it a shimmery shine on the top, I think that this helps the bubble stand out even more. I think that it is best to take the photo off in the sun light because as I mentioned before if it is a dark an dull day there might not be a reflection and there might not be any colours on it so the bubble would not look as good as it would on a sunny day. I think that the exposure is right for the image as it is not too dark or too light. In the bubble you can also clearly see the reflection which is really good. The reflection is of the school building behind me when I was taking the photo. The building has quite a lot of different shapes on it and I really like how you can see the whole building in such a small bubble as well. Again the bubble has a very soft and delicate texture to it because of the bubbles which are always very delicate and smooth. There is a little pattern in the bubble with the colours which are a green, blue and pink that kind of repeat themselves all the way around. The colours also help the bubble stand out even more and it gives it a quite warm and gentle feeling with the colours. I really like this photo because of the reflections, colours and the way the photo was took, I think that the photo is successful.
Edited Photos From Working In The Style Of Richard Heeks:
In the photos above I edited two bubbles to create a mickey mouse shape. Firstly I opened up the bubbles and used the elliptical marquee tool to go around the bubble. Then dragged the bubble onto the other page and duplicated it. I then placed both of the bubbles on top of the other bubble to make it look like the ears. I then changed the brightness and contrast and I also added an effect to make the colours stand out even more.

Starter Photos: Shoot 3
These are some photos that I have taken just to get an idea of how reflections work.
Analysing My Beginning Photos:
WORST PHOTO: I think that this is the worst photo out of my beginning photos because firstly the photo is under exposed. The photo is too dark and you can not really see that much. Also you can not see the whole mirror which makes the photo look bad. The reflection in the photo seems to look like it is out of focus and I also do not think that the reflection is any good. The lighting of the photo is really bad as well. The photo is too dull as there are not any vibrant colours to make the photo stand out. I learnt from this shoot that I am not that good at taking reflections in mirrors, I am better at doing them in bubbles and other reflective things. Overall this photo is not good and I think that I could do much better.
The photo above is the best photo from shoot 3. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo as it is not too under exposed or over exposed. I really like the reflection in the mirror of the clouds as the reflection is clear and It looks good. The cloud are creating a fluffy kind of shape and the photo overall has quite a soft, delicate and fluffy texture to it because of the clouds which are soft like a marshmallow. I also like how the colours are simple and they match each other because you have the light blue from the sky and the white from the clouds. The lighting in the photo was taken by the sun which is a natural source o flight and the photo was taken in the day light on a sunny day. Overall I really like the photo because It looks good, and the reflection is clear and nice.
Shoot 4:
Analysing Shoot 5:
WORST PHOTO: In my opinion this is the worst photo from my shoot 5 because firstly the angle of the photo is really bad, I should of took it straight like I did with others. There is no reflection in the photo as well, there is only a little reflection however it is not that clear. In my opinion I think that the photo is quite dull as well and it makes me feel a little bit sad as well. I think it needed to be more colourful like some of the others which would of helped to get a better and more clearer reflection. The photo was taken on a dull day which is why it does not look that good if it was taken on a sunny day it might of looked better. Overall the photo is not that good and I could of taken it better.
BEST PHOTO: In my opinion this was one of the best photos from shoot 4 because firstly I really like the reflection in the photo. You can see half of the building and the other half in the reflection and I think that it looks really good. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo and I really like the shape of the building and I like the pattern that is on the building a lot. The photo was reflected in a massive glass window which I really like as well. The image has a little bit of a blue tone which gives the photograph a cool feeling. The one thing that I would change about this photo is that I would zoom into the reflection and the building more as it is a little too far out. Overall I really like this photo because I think that the reflection looks really good.
Shoot 5:
Analysing Shoot 5:
WORST PHOTO: In my opinion I think that this is the worst photo from shoot 5 because firstly you can not see any reflection in the photo so it does not link to my exam theme. Also the photo is under exposed slightly which made the photo look quite dull and this gives me a quite gloomy and sad feeling which I do not like. Additionally the angle of the photo is all wrong, rather than it being a birds eye view it should of been a straight on view which might of helped the reflection come out more clearly. I also think because it was a dull day this impacted the picture as it created the gloomy feeling. Furthermore the photo is too zoomed out and it needs to be more closer. This photo is not particularly good and I can do better.
BEST PHOTO: In my opinion this is the best photo from shoot 5 because firstly you can see a clear and nice reflection in the water bead which I really like, I also like how the reflection is upside down in the water bead and I think it makes it looks more unique. I also love how all of the attention is on the water bead and the background is out of focus which makes the water bead the main focus. I think that the exposure is just right for the photo and I like the different shapes in the water bead and how you can see the other water beads in the water bead. The photo has quite a watery texture to it which I like and I also like how all the colours are quite similar and they all blend it together. Overall I think that this photo is pretty good and I like it.
Influence For My Final Piece:
Annette Messager is a french painter, photographer and sculptor. She went to go and study at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and her first exhibition was at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich (1973). During the 1970s her work was influenced by everyday life, using things like toys and needlework in her art. She also used a range of closely related objects. One of the reasons she stands out from other artists is because of the refined cruelty with which she dealt with memories and obsessions. She also has a few books by her self. The reason she has influenced me for my final piece is because of the way she hangs stuff from the walls (like below) and this is what I am going to do however I will be hanging photographs of bubbles from the wall.
Final Piece Plan:
For my final piece for reflections I have decided that I want to use bubbles. I want to use bubbles because I believe that they are a fun and creative way to obtain reflections. I have add many ideas for my final piece using bubbles for example creating a well known children character out of bubbles but then I thought that would be a little child like so I then had to re-think my idea. Eventually I decided that I want to create a installation that would make my bubbles look like they are floating. To do this I will have to take around about 50 or 60 photos of single bubbles with a reflection in. Then I will edit some of the photos, the edits will include putting other reflections in the bubble, increasing the brightness and contrast, changing the colours, adding effects and many more. After that I will then print out all the photos of the bubbles twice and then cut out and stick the bubble on some white card with the same bubble on the front and back. I will then use clear nylon to hang the bubbles onto a large frame which I will paint white and then the frame will be hung onto the ceiling so that it will look as if all the bubbles (some edited and some not edited) are floating like they do when you blow them outside, however these bubbles will have a reflection in them and they will look good. The equipment that I will need to complete this final piece is a large frame, 50/60 well taken photos of bubbles, clear nylon, tape and white acrylic paint.

Final Piece Photos:
Here are all of the photos I plan to use for my final piece. I might not use all of them because there is a lot but I am going to try to use as many as I can.
Final Piece: Step 1
The first thing I have done is I decided on all of the photos I wanted to use. I used roughly 50/60 photos and the ones I did not use will be on website with the rest so that you are able to see all of the best photos I would of used if the frame was big enough plus you will be able to see them in a better quality on the website. Once I decided on what photos I wanted to use I edited some of them and I kept most of them the same as they did not really need editing. In the photos below you can see some of the editing process that I did. I edited 10 photos. In the photos below you are able to see how the editing went. On some photos I put things in the bubble like a dog, a parrot, a water bead with a reflection in it and my little brother; to do this I used the magnetic lasso tool to select the object and then I dragged I over to the bubble. I then zoomed out to get the correct size and I placed the object in the bubble. On some I just lowered the opacity but then I found a way in which I would still be able to see the reflection once the object was on it. To do this I had to duplicate the bubble and then put it on top of the object and the other bubble then lower the opacity one again. Sometimes the object was too opaque so I used the rubber to darken the object. On the other pictures I just changed the hue, saturation, brightness, contrast, colours and added some filter effects like glow. The reason I trapped images inside the bubbles is because reflections capture an image.
Final Edited Photos:
Final Piece: Step 2
After I printed two copies of all of the photos out and set them all onto the table. I then used the circle cutter and the cutting mat to cut out all of the photos of the bubbles.
Final Piece: Step 3
After step 2 I then stuck the photos onto the white pieces of card and then I cut them all out again.
Final Piece: Step 4
I Then I glued the other photo of the same bubble on top. After I open the photo slightly and placed the nylon/holographic string in the bubble and stuck it down with tape and then glued it back. The same photo of the bubble is on the front and back of the card because when it turns around you will be able to see the photo of the bubbles on both sides.
Final Piece: Step 5
After that I then used the holographic string and tied it into the middle of the frame going straight and across so that I am able to hang my bubbles down from the middle. I then tied all of the bubbles onto the holographic string and frame until the whole frame was pretty much full with photos of bubbles.
Final Piece: Step 6
The next thing I did was I painted over the frame using white acrylic paint so that you will not be able to see the frame that much when it hangs onto the ceiling and to cover up some of the marks that were on the frame.
Final Piece: Step 7
The final step I did was I hung the frame with all of the bubbles attached to it onto the ceiling.

Final Piece Evaluation:
I really like my final piece. Firstly I like how it is something very different and unique. I like how I have used bubbles for reflections as it is not something ordinary like mirrors. It took me a long time to complete this however I think it look really good and cool. All of the bubbles are good and I like how it hangs from the ceiling to represent almost how bubbles float. I like all of the different colours that come from my final piece as it makes it better and gives me a happy feeling. Also some of the string I used shines which also look good. Overall I think that my final piece is very good and I am proud of it.
Evaluation:
I have really enjoyed exploring reflections for my exam, this has been my favourite things I have done in photography. Throughout my shoots I believe you can see a lot refinement and how I have gone from bad to good. At the start I thought that mirrors and glasses were the main things that have reflections however I was wrong as I used things like water beads and bubbles. The bubbles were the best thing in my opinion some the reflections | believe were absolutely beautiful and really good. However it was hard to capture the reflections in the bubbles as they would pop or fly away. Also I had to take a lot of photos to come out with some really good ones however in the end I did. I enjoyed creating my final piece even though it took long as I was able to express my creativity. Throughout the whole of my exam I have been able to expand my knowledge on how to use a camera and how to get good photos. My ideas and thinking outside the box has expanded and it has helped me improve my work and make good progress. This exam was really was a fun and I have enjoyed it. :)
