WHO IS SLINKACHU?
'The little people project' was produced in 2006. The best way to describe Slinkachu is that he is a London based photographer who uses miniature figurines to create detailed photographs. He takes tiny human figures and places them in real life urban situations. 'I've always been interested in small things' says Slinkachu. This shows that from a very young age he was taking a interest in small things. All the props he uses to capture these pictures he then leaves stranded on the street. Slinkachu's aim is to encourage people to be more aware of their surroundings; he does this by creating different common scenes in the community with his art work. He has been shooting his photos for more than 6 years. Slinkachu has had two shows in London and New York, he also has a book.
SLINKACHU'S WORK
ANALYSING SLINKACHU'S WORK
I have two favorite pieces of his work. My first favorite piece of Slinkachu's work is the couple kissing and the lights in the background that are sort of out of focus. The picture shows a couple kissing and the lights from the buildings shining upon them; I think the exposure is just right for the photo. Slinkachu has put the figures on a power point so that it is not in a common place like the center. The couple are the main focus point, so the picture is even clearer because all the attention is on the couple. The lights in the background create the perfect romantic scene; this is because it has a small depth of field. The lights attention draws you in to looking at the couple. I think the meaning behind this picture is that it shows a young couple enjoying their life together and it is set in a romantic place. The composition of the photo is good as well. This picture would connect and help me with my work because it shows a lot of different techniques used that I could use in my work.
My Second favorite picture of Slinkachu's work is the little basketball figure shooting the ball into the net. The first thing that makes me attracted to the photo and works is the fact that this picture is set in a real life urban situation. He uses shutter speed to capture the moment of the basketball player shooting the ball into the basket and scoring a goal. You would see people playing basketball around the streets, I think this is good because Slinkachu is making the viewer relate to the photograph. I like how the background is out of focus and the main focus is on the figure and the net. |

Analysing Isaac Cordal Photos
The meaning behind this picture is a group of politicians discussing global warming. When Isaac created this picture, in the news it was mentioned that sea levels were projected to rise up to three feet. I like the meaning behind this photo and how Isaac made a point of this situation using the mini figures and placing the water. I think it was a clever way to discuss the situation. I also like how you can see a little reflection in the photo as it makes the photo look a lot better and also I think that the angle of the photo and exposure are just right for the photo.

Plan For My First Slinkachu Take:
- Meaning: Somebody standing on a boat in water
- Slinkachu Figure: A person standing up
- Exposure: 0
- Background: In a puddle on the floor
- Aperture: A small aperture
My First Slinkachu Take
Best Photo From Slinkachu Take 1:
I believe that my first Slinkachu shoot was not very good. The reason for this is because I did not have a plan. This photo, in my opinion is the best one I have taken yet, I think this because it is in focus. You can clearly see the objects and the water. I think the exposure is okay. There is enough light. I like the composition, for example the figure is placed as if it is the captain of the boat, which I like. Also I think the viewpoint is okay, but to make it better it needs to be more down so the camera is looking directly at the objects. This is a okay picture but I could do a lot better.
Worst Photo From Slinkachu Take 1:
This is the worst photo I have taken. The reason why I think this is such a bad picture is because it is totally out of focus. You cannot see what the image needs to represent, also you cannot see the water or objects. The viewpoint for the photo is very wrong, the angle the photo is taken form does not show anything. You cannot see the composition of the picture. It would of been better if I used shutter speed so that I could freeze the moment of the photo where the boat looks like it is sailing in the water. This is the worst photo from my first Slinkachu take.
Plan For My Second Slinkachu Take:
- Meaning: A man standing on a ledge going to commit suicide.
- Slinkachu Figure: A man looking down
- Exposure: 0
- Background: Outside
- Aperture: A small aperture
My second Slinkachu Take
Best Photo From Take 2:
Firstly, this shoot was not that good. The meaning came across of a man committing suicide but the photos were not the best. However out of all the photos this one was the best because it is in focus and also I think the angle is right. You can clearly see the man looking down before the suicide attempt. This photo is okay but it could be a lot better. I think I should of tried it in different places to make it look more realistic.
Worst Photo From Take 2:
This photo is bad because firstly, it is very out of focus. The angle for the photo is not good it could of been zoomed in more. The photo does not look realistic enough, it just looks like a figure faced down; you can't tell that the man is dead. This photo is not the best it needs a lot of improving.
Plan for My Third Slinkachu Take:
- Meaning: A man looking out a window, thinking a lot.
- Slinkachu Figure: A man with his hands in his pocket
- Exposure: 0
- Background: Have the background out of focus
- Aperture: A small aperture
My Third Slinkachu Take
Best Photo From My Slinkachu Take 3:
This is my best photo from my second take. I believe it is my best photo because it has a meaning behind the photo. The meaning behind this photo is that the man is in deep thought, he is looking out the window and thinking a lot. Also I think because the background is out of focus, all the attention is on the man. I think doing this creates more effect on the picture and shows a lot more emotions. Also I like how to bright yellow colour of the building outside comes into the picture and no other colours are really shown, it is a like a spotlight on the man.
Worst Photo From My Slinkachu Take 3:
From my second Slinckachu I think that this has to be the worst photo I took. This is a bad photo because firstly you cannot even the see the figure. The figure is so out of focus that all you can see is a little blurred line. Also the photo has no meaning behind it so it does not create any emotions or effects. Finally the buildings in the background have no concept to be in the photo. This photo is my worst photo from my third Slinkachu shoot.
Plan for My Fourth Slinkachu Take:
- Meaning: A woman figure looking at her reflection thinking about her future
- Slinkachu Figures: A young woman dressed in red and a older woman dressed in red
- Exposure: 0
- Aperture: A large Aperture.
My Fourth Slinkachu Take:
Best Photo From My Slinkachu Take 4:
My third Slinkachu take, in my opinion didn't go that well, however this photo was the best photo out of them all. The meaning behind this photo is that the young woman is thinking hard about her future, when she is thinking she can see a older version of herself in the reflection that helps her. The photo is in focus and you can see the image clearly. Also I think that the angle is good as well.
Worst Photo From My Slinkachu Take 4:
This is the worst photo from my third take. The meaning behind this photo is that the young woman is thinking hard about her future then, when she is thinking she can see a older version of herself in the reflection that helps her. The meaning came out but the photo it self was not good. The picture is very out of focus and also I used flash by accident when I shouldn't have. I could do a lot better.

Plan For My Fifth Slinkachu Take:
- Meaning: This take is going to be the same as take three but I am going to try add deeper meaning. I am going to use a 'future you' prop so it looks as if it is a circus mirror.
- Slinkachu Figures: A young women dressed in red and a older woman dressed in red
- Exposure: 0
- Aperture: A large aperture
My Fifth Slinkachu Take:
Best Photo From My Fifth Slinkachu Take
I think this is the best photo from take four. Firstly I like the angle of the image you can clearly see both figures. This take is a big improvement from my take 4 because the photos have been taken better and also the meaning comes across more. You can clearly see the meaning behind this photo. Also the photo is in focus. I really like this take.
Worst Photo From My Fifth Slinkachu Take:
This is the worst from take 4 because it is very out of focus. You can not see the figures or the props properly. Also I do not think the angle is right. The picture is also too far out and you can not see what the picture is supposed to represent.
Plan For My Sixth Slinkachu Take:
- Meaning: The meaning behind this take is that there is a homeless dog in a cardboard box
- Slinkachu: A mini dog
- Exposure: 0
- Aperture: A large aperture
My Sixth Slinkachu Take:
Best Photo From Take 6:
This photo is the best from my sixth take. This photo is good because firstly, I like the meaning behind the homeless dog. The photo is in focus and can clearly see what the image represents. The photo kind of makes you feel a little sad and because the dog is looking straight at the camera and it looks sad. I think the angle for the photo is good and the cardboard box ties the photo together. The photo is taken on the street which makes it look more realistic. I really like this photo.
Editing Process:
In the photo below I edited the best photo and turned it black and white. To turn it black and white I just pressed CTRL, Shift and U which turned the photo black and white. Then I just adjusted the brightness and contrast by lowering the brightness and increasing the contrast. The editing process was quite easy. I really like this edited photo because it makes you feel more sorry and sad for the dog as the black and white effect creates quite a dull and depressing tone and feeling. I like the meaning behind the homeless dog.
Worst Photo From Take 6:
This photo is the worst one from my take 6. You can see what the picture means but the picture is out of focus. Also you can only see half the props so the angle is not right for the photo. The dog is the main prop but you can not see the face properly so you can not get much emotions out of the photo, that is why this photo is the worst.
Some Of My Best Photos From Slinkachu:
Evaluation:
I have really enjoyed exploring Slinkachu, I think it is a very interesting topic. Throughout my takes you can see that the photos have gone from bad to okay to good. I think I have shown good progress. My first and second takes were not good because I did not have any ideas and also I did not know how to fully work the camera; these takes were my bad takes. From take 3 on wards my ideas have began to expand and I found it easier to come up with my own Slinkachu inspired ideas. I like take 3 of how to man was in deep thought. Take 4 I really like the meaning of the future you but the photos were not good. For take 5 I really wanted to base it on the same meaning as take 4 but improve it, so I made a prop and the photos came out better. Finally take 6 was my best take, I loved the meaning behind it, it was all in focus and the right angle, it was a big improvement from take 1. Throughout the whole Slinkachu unit I have been able to expand my knowledge on how to use a camera and how to get good photos. My ideas and thinking outside the box has expanded and it has helped me improve my work and make good progress. Slinkachu was a fun and good unit to do and I have enjoyed it. :)
